So I Watched... Daredevil: Born Again
The streets of Hell's Kitchen have never been darker, more violent, or more compelling than in Marvel Studios' Daredevil Born Again. After experiencing all nine episodes, one thing becomes crystal clear - this isn't your typical Disney+ superhero fare. The series maintains every ounce of grit, intensity, and mature storytelling that made the original Netflix series a landmark in superhero television.
Charlie Cox slips back into Matt Murdock's world with remarkable ease, embodying both the lawyer's moral complexity and Daredevil's physical prowess. His performance reminds us why Marvel has positioned him as the cornerstone of their street-level heroes. Meanwhile, Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk remains one of the most captivating villains in the Marvel universe, with subtle facial twitches and controlled rage that mask a powder keg of violence waiting to explode. Their diner confrontation in the first episode sets the tone for their complex relationship throughout the series.
The show delivers spectacular action sequences, particularly the one-shot fight scenes that became a hallmark of the original series. Directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (responsible for episodes 1, 8, and 9) demonstrate exceptional visual storytelling, using color to represent different characters – red for Daredevil, blue for Bullseye, and white for Kingpin. Their visualization of Matt's heightened senses through aspect ratio changes and focus techniques enhances the storytelling in meaningful ways.
John Bernthal's return as Frank Castle/The Punisher provides another highlight, with his scene alongside Matt in episode four perfectly capturing their complicated relationship. The late Kamar de los Reyes delivers a standout performance as Hector Ayala/White Tiger, while the actress playing his niece Angela shows tremendous promise for her character's future in the MCU.
The series balances its intensity with moments of humor and heart, never losing sight of the human connections that drive these characters. As the season concludes with our hero in a seemingly hopeless position, the groundwork is laid for an even more compelling second season that might even include appearances from the other Defenders.

Hello all you awesome people and welcome and welcome back to GeekVisits Entertainment, the one place dedicated to the victory of visual media, that of course being film, video games and television. There we go. I'm your host, as always Hoover, and we have here. We got a brand new. I Just Watched because I am coming off fresh off the premiere of the final episode for Daredevil Born Again. Final episode for daredevil born again. The last episode. I just finished watching it came straight over here to record so I can give my general thoughts on the brand new series. So that's what we're going to be talking about here today.
Speaker 1:Um, so, if you don't know, I uh, this is the kind of the new way I go about doing review. Don't really do full, in-depth reviews on stuff anymore. I just kind of talk about my thoughts and my ideas and kind of what I thought of the show in general and whatnot. So that's basically what we're going to be doing here today for marvel studios's daredevil born again. Uh, all right, so, um, I guess, to start off, I will just start off by saying this shit was fire. Yeah, the show is damn, damn good. I will say that. I will say it doesn't fully knock it out the park Like. It's not like a 10 out of 10. Maybe not even a 9. It might be not even a nine, might be a nine, it might be a nine. Um, you know, we might have to watch the series again to really kind of determine what I think about everything. But for the but for just. In general, the show is extremely, extremely good.
Speaker 1:Um, first and foremost I will say I am, I don't know. I'm glad they did. I don't know how they did it. I don't know what strings had to be pulled. I don't know what had to be taken to the mother, to the damn, to the table when it was discussed in bringing the show back. But they somehow brought it back and it kept that same intensity, the violence, the gore, the action, that high level. You know sort of high octane action and drama. You know the darker, more subjective themes. They kept that in the show heavy and I respect the hell out of them for doing this.
Speaker 1:There were many times watching this show where I'm just doing this. It's like there was many times watching this show where I'm just watching it. I'm like, bro, this is on Disney. I'm just like this is, this is on Disney plus. What the hell are we doing? But I loved it. I loved every single moment of it. Um, so respect for that. Um.
Speaker 1:I do want to say straight up um, I feel like the? Um. The first and the last two episodes are probably like the strongest episodes we've gotten. I feel are the strongest episodes in the show. There was um. There was um. What episode was that?
Speaker 1:I should have kept like an episode list on here, but it was the um. Oh, I'm trying to keep things fairly spoiler heavy. I'm gonna try. I can't promise anything, but I will. Um, let me see if I can get a get an episode account here, because I want to remember what episode it was.
Speaker 1:There was an episode um, I think it was. I think it was the fifth episode. I want to say, um, that one was really good there. Um, yeah, they had, they did like this really cool thing of like uh, this, like dual um. Basically, matt had an action scene where he was fighting uh, where he was fighting muse, one of the bad guys in the show, and kingpin was also having an action part in the show. He was fighting somebody um, as well and uh, yeah, I think it was episode five and um, no, six, episode six is what I'm is the one I'm talking about, um, and they cut it extremely, extremely well of jumping between the action of both at the same time and it was just. It was just very well done and that was a really good episode too.
Speaker 1:Um, one of the best moments in the show was episode four. Um, when the frank castle for uh reappeared, first, appeared again for the first time and you know I don't know how long um, the scene between him and matt was was great. John berthold and charlie cox uh really killed it in that scene, so that was great too. Uh, another great moment is the? Uh, the first little conversation between fisk and matt in the show. I think it happens in like the first episode. They're in a little diner. There's been some stings for it here and there. Uh, that one was also fantastic. So the show does uh, the show did a really damn good job.
Speaker 1:Um, they also managed to sprinkle in a lot of good, actual hitting humor in the show as well. So it's not all just like this dark, brooding shit going on in there. They do a really good job of also kind of sprinkling a lot of humor and a lot of lightheartedness. There's literally an entire episode. I believe it's episode five. Episode five is literally like it's a a bottle episode and it's like literally just all kind of more of like a light-hearted kind of episode. So that is so. That was really really done.
Speaker 1:Um also want to talk about uh, I guess we can talk about the performances. That kind of goes naturally into it. Um, charlie cox, I mean I I've been I'm not going to say wondering, I have been the fact that Charlie Cox, matt Murdock, has sort of been basically the Tony Stark, iron man of the Marvel TV aspect. Of course you know he had Daredevil, had the most seasons, even back in the netflix times he had three. Everybody else only had two. Um, and he's been appearing sporadically throughout the mcu ever since they talk about bringing them back. He popped up in your friendly neighborhood spider-man. He popped up in spider-man no way home, um, and he popped up in echo as well. So charlie cox has been popping up all over the place as daredevil and it's been great. And he and I've been wondering like man, I, I, charlie, I like, I liked it. Don't get wrong, I like it, but I'm like man.
Speaker 1:Why haven't they really tried to incorporate anybody else from the show. You know, like jessica Luke Cage, um, I kind of understand why, kind of understand why it's not Iron Fist. Um, you know that's gonna take some. I don't know what they gonna do with that for the future, but I get it. Um, but like Luke Cage, I feel like has also been a great character. Um, jessica Jones was also a really good, enjoyable character. I felt season one of Jessica Jones is like supremely underrated, I will say that much. But uh, yeah, but watching this show it just kind of reminded me again. It's like, okay, this is why they uh always pit, uh, charlie Cox. They had Charlie Cox be the one to sort of lead this.
Speaker 1:Um, vincent D'Onofrio as well, because he he also appeared in Echo and Hawkeye as well, because, goddammit, they are so good, he understands this character so well and portrays it just to the highest of the abilities. And I'm like, alright, I get it, I see it, I understand it. Can't, I can't fault you for that. Uh, yeah, vincent D'Onofrio, as as Wilson Fitz Kingpin, so great, just so fantastic. He just has this.
Speaker 1:Um, I remember one episode he was getting pressed by, um by, by, uh one of the criminal underground guys, like a mafia guy or something, and like he said some shit, like some disrespectful shit, and he just he just had like this little fucking twitch go off, like right in this spot here, like right above his mouth, right next to his nose, just this little twitch, and I don't know, I don't know how the fuck he did it, but just a little small things like that was just so good to see and just all this, just how that character is. He portrays that character of just like cold and distant, but also so fearishly passionate and just as like a powder keg. Just underneath this very, you know what he tries to project as a very, um, uh, composed individual, but inside, you know, it's just like a powder keg and it's just these small little twitches with his hands or with his eyes in his face and it it's just so well done. So, yeah, both of them were great.
Speaker 1:Um, like I mentioned, seeing john burnthal come back as the punisher is phenomenal as hell. Um, we finally get the l. I swear to god, I don't know if I'm the, I don't know if I'm the only one, I don't know if y'all feel about this way too, but whenever I think about daredevil and the punisher, and even visit d'onofrio's uh, kingpin, the first thing that always comes to my mind is the yelling, just all, just a distinct yell all three of them have for their characters is the first thing that always pops into my head, and it was so good to see John Bernthal's Frank Castle again as the Punisher and we get that yell back. Uh, that's, that's just always the first thing in my head, and of course it was. It didn't like the fucking second episode. Uh, charlie Matt Murdock is yelling already. So, uh, it was good to see, good to see him. He, he also just has that character just down pat to a T.
Speaker 1:Uh, some other characters I really liked in this show um, was they michael gandolfini as daniel blake? He was really good, just just just like just playing that character so well, just of just a a little just millennial fucking, just a a suck up really, uh, yeah, he just and he does it so very well. Um, and it's just it was he was. He was a fantastic job too. Um, we had deborah and wolf come back too kissy, and karen payne was really nice.
Speaker 1:Um, oh, the guy who plays, uh, gallo like the freaking police chief, as fisk is mayor now and he knows fisk is, is the kingpin and is up to some no good shit. That as well. His performance in there was really good as well. Oh, and, freaking, what's the actor's name? The actor who played White Tiger, hector Ayala. He was phenomenal too, him, and the actress who played his niece. They were fucking great. It's a. It's a shame too, because the guy who played um, hector ayala. He passed away before the show aired. Um, let me see if I can figure out his name. Uh, uh uh, kamar de los reyes. He was great.
Speaker 1:Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh uh. Moments of like him talking to matt in the jail cell, uh, him giving like his testimony in the court, all very well, and the and the fucking actress who played his niece. She was fucking phenomenal. I hope they bring her back. I know they're doing like this little young avengers champions thing. Clearly they setting her up, uh, to take on the mantle of white tiger in the future. Please bring her back and let like, and please bring her back and give her more to do, because she was phenomenal in this show. Uh, you know, it's just so great. I gotta, I gotta, figure out her name, because that's how good she was. Was the angel del toro? Was that her name? Do-do-do-do-do, was it Angel Del Toro? Was that her name? Now, it's the character's name. I figured out, but yeah, she was, she was great too. Um, so, let me figure out. Angela was her name in the show, but yeah, she was, she was great. Uh, yeah, bring her back, put her on the, put her on the, put her on that young avengers team, because she was, she was sensational in the show.
Speaker 1:Um, so, yeah, a lot of great performances, even like the little, the guys who played like the cops, the little, the little shitty, anti, uh, vigilante task force in the show. Uh, they were great too. So, yeah, just, uh, just, a lot of phenomenal performances all around. Um, the, the new flame in in matt murdoch's life, his, uh, his girlfriend the therapist, she was great too. Um. So, yeah, everybody in here was great. Um, damn, what more of the fuck. Like I said, the gore and the action in this was great.
Speaker 1:Um, now, for as good as a lot of stuff was, there are some things I felt like not necessarily bad, but some things that I feel like were a little short and oh, I fucking goddamn dex, dexter point, the uh point, dexter bullseye, fucking great in this. So that's fucking opening in the first episode was some, was some shit. It was, it was some shit, but goddamn, he was, he was fucking great in that shit too. Um, yeah, so just great performances all around. Um, but yeah, like I said first, greatest, well, there was some little things.
Speaker 1:I feel like a little short change, uh, muse for for one. Uh, first and foremost, uh, I felt like his time in the show was very limited, especially for such an interesting character. Um, like, uh, it was very, it was very truncated with, like, the reveal of who he was and also the resolution to that whole storyline all wrapped up in a very short amount of time, and I felt like he was such. He's such an interesting character. I would like to see him around more. It's one of those things that marvel just does where, like they tend to not really keep bad guys around for a lengthy period of time to reuse them, which I hate because I mean, like, look, some of the best people they kind of bring back and do great things fucking loki, first and foremost, all the people they use it in Thunderbolts. So I just felt like the muse thing was very underserved. It served a purpose, um, um, I don't want to spoil too much of it, but it served a purpose and the purpose it was meant to serve, um, it did it. I just felt like it could have, it could have been more uh for that character in that storyline, um, so yeah.
Speaker 1:So there was that, um, like I mentioned, it was a very fun episode. But, uh, there was that bottle episode and like episode with, uh, what did I say? Three, four, whatever it was. Um, while it was enjoyable, it did kind of it did kind of feel like it didn't really move the needle narratively or anything. It was just, it was just a nice little fun episode, that kind of. Not too much really happened in it. So yeah, but I mean it was nice. Uh, it featured a guest appearance. That was really cool and that.
Speaker 1:I wonder what connections is that? And it feels like if, if it does happen in the future, it feels like that whole episode was just meant to serve as that. It seems like it was meant to connect Matt to some other heroes in the future. So I don't know, we'll have to wait and see how that turns out, but yeah, it kind of seemed like it was only meant to serve that purpose, but't know, we'll have to wait and see how that turns out. Uh, but yeah, it kind of seemed like it was only meant to serve that purpose. But you know, we'll have to wait. We'll have to wait and see.
Speaker 1:Um, there were a few episodes that did kind of feel. Now, if y'all don't know, daredevil Born Again did have some um production issues, um like um, the original, original, um creative team that was behind it they got um, let go, because once COVID happened and um, they sort of had, I guess, covid happened so they had a little bit more time on their hands so they able to go and sort of catch up on what that team was doing. And Feige and the team kind of didn't like what was going on. So they kind of, uh, let that team go, brought in a new team and essentially sort of restructured the show, uh, to kind of make it close to what it was in the Netflix days, um, and then sometimes you can see that I feel like that bottle episode might have been one, uh, of those kind of episodes where you can kind of see the the differences in tone and and purpose. Um, that third episode I think it was the third episode, fourth episode, the one where Frank came out, that one was another one. It did kind of feel like it was two different episodes that they kind of stitched together Um, and again you could kind of feel that you, once you watched it, it you can see and you can feel the difference in them. Um, maybe that was also why muse was such a a small part in the series as well, because that might have been just two different creatives teams with two different ideas. So they kind of got brought in it to serve a purpose, um, but it was very small purpose.
Speaker 1:Um, if I remember correctly, reports said that that first initial idea was very much focused on um. Um, it was more of a court drama. So a lot of it was like more of like the casework, which I feel the original plan was kind of like how they did for season two. I think the original story mostly focused on the hector ayala case uh, because that played a big that plays a big role in this season two. Um, but I figure I think the majority of the season was about the uh, the hector ayala trial and the white tiger stuff. So I think that might have been a big change for that as well and sort of more like focusing on uh, the task force and kingpin's corruption within the uh, within the uh, the, the, the city workings. I feel like that might have been more brought to the forefront in the redo, um, so yeah, so there are some moments where it's like, okay, you can see that this is kind of like a different thing, like even um episode seven that has the uh, the confrontation between daredevil and muse even that one I kind of felt like like there's like there's a moment where where matt figures out who the next uh victim is and it's a very strange way to go about it.
Speaker 1:Um, I got mild spoilers for it. Um, he's dating a therapist and the therapist is also, uh, muses, alter egos, uh, therapist, they go to see her as well and they have a little moment where, like before she goes to the case, they have a little moment where, like before she goes to the case, they have a little intimate moment and he, like he, you know, he rubs his hand across her face, you know, just like that's how he sees her and shit like that. So when he goes back to the scene of the crime and Muses little den, he finds a bunch of Muses paintings and one of them is of her, but of course the man's blind, he, he can't see that. So like, rubs his hand against the, the image, and somehow it's able to tell that it's her. Like I get, it's on a canvas, so it might be a bit more of a of a raised um, of of drawing, so it might be some texture there. But the fact that it's enough texture that he could actually get the features of the her face to know that it's her, that was, he could actually get the features of the her face to know that it's her, that was kind of that was. That was one of those things like, okay, sure, buddy, you know, whatever. So so there are.
Speaker 1:There are some shortcomings in the show, like I said, I think that's just the uh, the, the hang-off from sort of two different shows that they, you know they're trying to fix up and whatnot. Yeah, so the finale just went off. The finale was violent as hell. Those, like I said, the first episode and the last two episodes I feel like are the strongest, especially episodes one and episode eight, very, very strong episodes. I believe those ones were directly direct, directly directed. Those ones were directed by the guys they brought in to the guys they brought in to actually do to spearhead the redirection of the show. Let me see if I can find them the Newton Brothers or something like that. I'm probably wrong, but Let me see. No, that is their name. The Newton Brothers. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so it's this. Yeah, so the newton brothers, they were the ones who were brought in to sort of spearhead, I believe, the new redirection. Or are they just the composers? This composer who directed? Uh, let me see, hold on, gotta do a little research here. Who directed those episodes? Morehead and Benson, is that who that is? That sounds right. That sounds right. Yes, yes, yes, they did. Yeah, yeah, aaron moorhead and john and justin benson. They're ones who direct episodes one, eight and nine, uh, which, like I said, I feel are the strongest episodes, and they are the ones who kind of uh, they were like the showrunners who really spearheaded the uh, the show's re recreation Once they got rid of the old people and brought in the new ones. They were the two who spearheaded it. Um, can we, can we like, give them like the Matt Shackman treatment. Just just give them control of the entire show. Let them direct every episode of season two, because they do some damn good work. I will say like a lot of like, especially in episode eight, a lot of that camera work.
Speaker 1:Episode one two daredevil I feel like it started to get synonymous for it's winner, uh wonder, which is just one. Take linear uh fight scenes. We know the infamous hallway scene from the original uh netflix series. This one, the first episode, opened with a huge, fucking one-shot fight between daredevil and bullseye. That literally went from the front of the bar to inside the bar, to the back room of the bar, to the back stairs of the bar, to the stairways of the bar, all the way up to the, and after that we cut to the roof. But that was a fucking great shot and great action. Um, hard-hitting, very dramatic, because again, I don't want to spoil thing too big right now, but there was. There was a big fucking moment in the opening of that episode, one that really put uh, that. That really tugs on the heartstrings very, very heavy. So there's that too.
Speaker 1:Um, and then the uh, what was the isle of joy, episode eight? What they did with like the um the colors, um, why did it come out like that? I think my voice cracked super fucking hard there. Um be it. What they did with like the colors, I need some water, that's what I need.
Speaker 1:Um great job on that too, because they just, uh, every time dicks, uh bullseye would like was in danger or he was like hyper focused on on something, uh, they were, it would change to like this blue tint and that was just also just just well, well done the um. You know how they shot everything in that little ballroom for the for the party was also very great the way they shoot sort of matt's senses where they kind of shrink the aspect ratio. They have this little you know rack focus of, like a little speck in the camera to bring attention to his ear, to bring your eye to his ear because you know, that's how he's sort of focusing in on things. All just very, very well done. And though the message with the lighting of, like you know, daredevils has this red light. They had, uh, they had, like I mentioned, bullseye with the blue light. They had Kingpin with a lot of white light. He had like a little sometimes they mess with the lights to kind of give him a halo, which was fucking hilarious.
Speaker 1:But yeah, just give them the show, just let them direct all the episodes, give them creative control and just let them go, because it was all great stuff. Uh, but man, the show, the show is just very good. Uh, like I said, it is a little bit of shortcomings here or there. Hopefully it's season two. It all gets ironed out, uh, because season two actually no season two, because they shot seasons one and two was basically supposed to be the whole original series but they split it into two, uh, nine episodes each. So hopefully they iron everything out for season two. Season two is a little better. Uh, I don't know how it can get better, but it will be. Um, but hopefully, hopefully it is. But yeah, daredevil Born Again is just so damn good.
Speaker 1:Um, also, I wanted to bring up just a little bit after the finale. Um, things are left off in a bit of uh, of a bit of a hopeless state. Uh, you know, we got out. Which is the kind of shit I love from stories is when we get those moments, especially in tv, because the movies is just like an act and you know it's going to get resolved by the end of the movie, unless it's like a franchise and then they continue it on to the next movie like some uh uh, like some empire strikes back shit. But that moment where, like, the hero is just back up against the wall very little hope. You know they're the underdog in this situation now. Uh, you know, bad guys come up and just did some shit. That's where we end this season off it, and I'm very excited to see what the next season brings.
Speaker 1:Um does have me asking the question, though the way it ends it definitely has me asking the question, though I know there were some reports that discussions are open about um conversations with the likes of Kristen Ritter, uh, mike Coulter and maybe even Finn Jones. Um, I gotta think, does the way that season ended? Can we be seeing the other defenders popping up in the in this series as well. I'm kind of hoping it, but I'm keeping that hope very, very tame because I know it's probably a very slim chance, especially considering the fact that they've already shot, uh, season two for the most part. So we'll have to see um. But one of the biggest things I have concerns with is how this connects with um, spider-man brand new day. Uh, I do believe, as of right now, daredevil season two is going to happen before spider-man brand new day. Spider-man happens in the summer of 20 of next year. Um and I like daredevil is slated to happen early to mid next year, so it'll probably come out before spider-man. So you know if, if things get wrapped up in season two, we probably won't see too much of an effect on the Spider-Man movie. But I feel like we should definitely get some references to Spider-Man, to what happened in Daredevil, in Spider-Man, especially considering the fact that, like I said, like I hope, spider-man is going to be a back to basics, street level movie. So if we should get some kind of interaction, some mention or something going on there, um, but yeah, that's kind of my initial thoughts.
Speaker 1:Dead devil born again is a great show. I'm glad I watched it. It was one of my most anticipated shows of this year and it lived up to it. Great show, very well done. Every episode is now streaming on disney plus. So for those people who don't like to watch shit weekly and just prefer to just binge everything in one go, it's all up there now. So go check it out. I highly highly recommend it. It is very, very good. So daredevil born again is damn good in my book. So, yeah, so that is my impressions of daredevil born again.
Speaker 1:Thank you all so much for watching. Let me know, let me know down in the comments, what you thought of the show. What was your favorite moments? Uh, what your favorite characters? Uh, were the heartbreaking moments as heartbreaking for you as it was for me? Because I'm telling you that freaking start, that first episode was very shocking, very, that was very shocking. Who has your favorite scream? Who has your favorite yell between between matt frank and fisk, mine's, mine's, mine's definitely frank, mine's different, that john bernthal yell, it's great. So let me know down in the comments below what you thought of the show. Uh, if you feel so inclined, like the video, even subscribe, get in on the ground floor.
Speaker 1:I'm an extremely minuscule, small channel, but hey, we, we, we just doing shit. We just trying some shit out. So thank you so much for watching. Feel free to check out some of the other stuff I got on the channel as well. Uh, we got um. I talked about Invincible Season 3 and Hulu's Paradise, so I think I'm doing pretty well.
Speaker 1:On the shows I said I was interested in to start the year, I got to catch up on Yellow Jackets and I got to figure out a way to watch Dope Thief, because those were all the shows I was excited about for this year. Last of Us just started, so I got to figure out a way to watch that as well. Last of Us just started, so I got to figure out a way to watch that as well In some kind of way that doesn't involve me having to subscribe to Max and Dope Thief, so I don't have to subscribe to Apple Plus. So we're going to have to look at some things there. But anyway, that's it for me here. Check out some other stuff on the channel. I got some news drops. We got some video game news, some walkthroughs All that good stuff. So thank you all so much for watching. I very much appreciate it.
Speaker 1:Always, everybody remember to stay watching, stay playing to stay awesome and, most importantly, to stay safe out there, because it is it's some, it's some scary, worriful times out there right now. By the way, this show, uh, with fisk's power trip as the mayor in this show, some shit that is very scarily reminiscent of shit going on in this nation right now. That's all I'm saying. Some shit that is very mirroring, some mirroring real life shit. A little bit too close and it's crazy, because a lot of people gonna watch this show and be like, hey, that shit is so raw, you can't get away with that. And then you know, probably voted for the nigga anyway. So there you go. That's all I'm saying. Anyway, 10. That's all everybody. I'll see you all later. Goodbye.
