hello, all you awesome people out there. Welcome, or welcome back to geek visions entertainment, the place dedicated to the big three of visual media, that of course being film, video games and television. I'm your host, as always, hoover, and I am here to talk about what I just watched. Well, I actually watched it quite a while ago. I'm just only now getting around to getting in front of the computer to record for it, but I just saw Sinners, ryan Coar and michael b jordan's newest film, uh, the fourth collaboration between the two. Um, and I just saw. So I'm here to talk about.
Speaker 1:I know y'all seen the hype. I know y'all seen the reviews. Uh, is it? Is it the movie of the year so far? Uh, is it really that good? And I am here to give my opinion on it, my impressions, that I'm here to tell you, um, yeah, believe the hype, because, yes, yes, yeah, because yes, yes, yes, it is, it really is. Um, uh, I'm gonna let y'all know right now this is probably gonna be a. This. Probably this might be the shortest video we have for the. Uh, I just watched stuff. Uh, because I ain't gonna lie, I don't get too much negative uh to talk about with the movie. Uh, because, as I said, yes, the movie is that damn good. Uh, if y'all don't know, sinners I I want to spoil anything because, like, this is a damn good movie and I would advise everybody go out to see it. If you want the short version of the video, is that it's a damn good movie and I would advise anybody who can and see it. If you want the short version of the video, it's that it's a damn good movie and I would advise anybody who can and wants to to go to the theaters and go see it. Go to the theaters and see it. Don't bootleg the shit, especially, especially all my brothers and sisters out there. Don't fucking just bootleg the shit. Go out and see it Like it's worth seeing. But, yeah, if you go to short version of that, is that, yeah, it's just a damn good movie. Uh, it's that good. Believe the hype. It's really fucking good. Go see it if you can. Um, but if you're interested in more of the of the longer version of it, uh, if y'all don't know, I don't want to spoil it.
Speaker 1:This is gonna be spoiler free. I'll talk about some things here and there, very small things, but I do want to avoid spoilers because I said, I do want you to go out and watch the movie if you haven't already. So in a? Uh, it's completely a voice spoiler, if y'all don't know, this is uh, it's been hyped up as a? Um uh, it's a.
Speaker 1:It's a vampire movie. Uh, vampires are looking to attack a? Uh, a small group of people, uh, during the night where they were out kind of enjoying the night. Um, it does. It is a period piece, takes place in uh, sort of the uh, deep south and then the jim crow era in the 30s. Uh, and that's about all I'm gonna give to you because, um, yeah, there is a lot more to the movie and that's why I would advise everybody go see it. There's a lot more to it than just that and I think it's one of the reasons why the movie works so well. Um, so, you know how, uh, every it seems like a lot every actor or director, they have that one movie, that one project that comes along, and it comes along and it's like everybody can see, like that's the one, that's the one that's gonna, like that's the one that pushes them into like, uh, heavily sought after territory. You know, you think about, like you know, christopher nolan when he did, uh, when he went on the run of like the batman trilogy and inception those are the throws and he kind of took off ever since.
Speaker 1:I feel like this is that for Ryan Coogler. I feel like this he's done some good work before. As I mentioned, he's done a Fruitvale station, a black Panther, black Panther, wakanda, forever creed. He's done all those. But I feel like this is the one where it's like it's going to put him in in one of those top tier director categories and like we definitely gotta see where he goes after this. But this is definitely one where it's like it's putting him up there. It's gonna put him on a lot of, a lot of, uh, a lot of studios list to to do something. At least I hope it will. I know there's this whole other talk going on about some other stuff, so we'll talk about that a little bit, but I won't talk about it too much.
Speaker 1:I want to purposely focus on just how damn good this movie is. So, yeah, like the cinematography is absolutely beautiful. Just a lot of the shots that they use. There's a lot of outdoor shots that they use. They use a lot of outdoor, uh, um, shooting. I feel like Um and just the the, the way there's just the how everything just looks so beautifully natural, even when it's a, it was obviously in a controlled space. Even when you're outside, you control as much as you can, uh, but my goodness, the movie is just gorgeous. As a, as a Midwestern man who's in the midwest his whole life and never been to the south, when I think of southern heat, uh, this movie looks like how I envision. Just old southern heat is especially back in the day and like it really. It really does feel like that. But, uh, man, just the, the cinematography, the camera work, the action scenes that they do in here all just shot extremely well. It is a gorgeous looking movie.
Speaker 1:In the end, too, the actors, every single main character in this movie, every actor in this movie came and just completely showed their ass movie. Every actor in this movie came and just completely showed their ass. Um, michael b jordan, in the dual role, uh, of the two characters, uh, smokes and smoke and stacks, um, phenomenal job on there. Like I know it's very. It's got to be pretty taxing and challenging to play two characters, uh, especially two very different characters in the same movie and you're playing both of them Because you know Smoke is, the more level-headed, the more logical, business-savvy one Stack seems to be a bit more of like you know the free spirit. He tries to connect more with people and be more of a people person, and so to see him sort of just kill both of these roles was great to see Freaking.
Speaker 1:Everybody here Haley, steinfeld, rumi, masaka, what's his name? Delroy everybody here was great. I do want to give a special shout out because, um, what's his name? He played, uh, he played sam, the, the, the preacher boy. I believe this was his first, uh, major film role and he was great in this movie too. So, like everybody in the acting front just was just, everybody did their job. Um, the guy who plays the main vampire in the movie phenomenal job from him as well. Everybody just just did so damn well. Um, yeah. So cinematography was great, uh, acting was great.
Speaker 1:Um, I didn't know music was gonna play such an important role in this movie. Like I knew it was gonna be a uh, I knew it was gonna be an aspect because of, um. I know in one of the trailers they kind of gave this little opening statement on, um, uh, the power of like music and how, um, you know, artists could play music so well, um, but I didn't expect it to play such an important role in this movie. Um, but it did, and there's a, there's a certain sequence in this. Uh, what music is playing, that is just uh, it's just a beautiful marvel to to watch and see and it was done so very well. Um, and, and I loved every moment of it. Um, but, yeah, like I said, I didn't expect it to play such an important role in it, but it played a pretty big role and I really, really enjoyed that aspect of it. Um, uh, another thing I really enjoyed um, I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to dive into it too much, so I'm going to try my best to tiptoe around it.
Speaker 1:But the, the, uh, the vampires in this movie and the um, the, the, the mo, the, the modus operandi, the mission statement of, of the, of the main vampire in this I felt like was done so damn well. I'm so used to seeing vampires in the movies just kind of being, just you know, monsters who just trying to, just you know, drink blood and kill everybody and satiate the thirst for blood and shit like that, but in this one, the way they handled why he was doing the things he did and how it fit into the time frame that they were. If y'all seen the movie, I know what I'm talking about, uh, and how it fits within the time frame of when they are where they are and it honestly holds weight. Today I felt like that was. I think that was the the moment they had that scene and and that explanation. I think that was the moment they had that scene and that explanation happened.
Speaker 1:I think that was the moment where this movie kind of got put into a whole different tier for me, because I just think that was so extremely well done and well thought out and, honestly, as screwed up as it was, it was also strangely understandable and you know so much. So, where I could, I could see, uh, if somebody were to agree with that, like again, I don't want to talk, I don't want to spoil it too much, but but they were talking to michael b drum's character and you could kind of see he was, he was, he was, he was buying. Well, he was buying what he was selling and I understood, uh, uh, why. So I thought that was just so extremely well done and and part and like just expertly crafted and and it was understandable too. So that was the moment for me that really kind of put the movie into a whole nother tier for me. Um, but yeah, like the entire movie is just so damn good.
Speaker 1:They're like a few movies I watch where I get this feeling of like this movie is doing something special, and this is definitely one of them. It was like the same way I felt with, like besides, you know, my like the nerdy shit of, like you know, watching the avengers for the first time, or or you know, in game and shit like that. I mean when, like, a movie is so creative and has an identity, uh, wholly in itself, and it can only be that way, in that movie, like, uh, everything everywhere all at once and get out were like the two movies that come to my mind that had that type of refill in terms of like recent movies, um, this felt like that too. Um, just an identity wholly its own, and it sticks to it and it sticks the landing and it's so very strong in it and it just kind of gives you that feeling of just like this is how movies are supposed to make you feel this. This is how movies are supposed to make you think a big thing, especially especially in today's age, because even people who could probably see this movie still don't get a lot of the shit that the movie was trying to say. They just vampire movie, and now that's how they took from it. But, uh, like that's, that's how movies supposed to be, that's art. Like you know what I mean. Like that's art, that's how it should be.
Speaker 1:Um, speaking of that, if you haven't seen the movie or you're interested, haven't seen it. Especially if you because there's this whole thing in this day and age where motherfuckers are always talking about hollywood is all out of ideas. All they got is prequels and sequels and remakes and reboots and all this shit. Well, here you go. Now you got this holy original movie that exists all in its own. It's all original ideas. Uh, it's doing something. Nobody, nothing else is really done. Um, I mean a lot of people I've been seeing this little subset people saying it's just, it's just fucking from dust till dawn, just for black people, and it's clearly inspired by from dust till dawn, uh, but it does its wholly own identity thing. Um, uh, and it's and it's really good, uh, but, yeah, what was I saying? Oh, people, just, this is an original movie. Um, idea is wholly its own, completely original. It's something new, it's something creative and I feel like, if you've been having the argument that hollywood's out of ideas and nobody's doing anything interesting or unique, here you go, especially, except that this movie had a pretty had a really good weekend, opening weekend. Um, so let's keep that up, uh, and go see the movie if you haven't, because it definitely is like it's that. It's. It's one of those that if you want to complain how there's no more original ideas, we got to support the ones that do. Okay, so come, so go support the day a movie and go watch it and go see it. Um, thanks, it's probably gonna be a pretty short episode, because I don't.
Speaker 1:I don't think there's anything too negative I can say about the movie, because the movie is just, it's just really good. Um, there has been some. This is just it's kind of funny, honestly, uh, there is some extra. I don't know if you can say it's not controversy, but it's a it's a weird ass. It's a weird ass. Take um, so, if y'all.
Speaker 1:So there's this news making the rounds that when coogler made this movie, he, um, he cut a deal where, after I think, what 25 years, 20 years or something. The rights will solely go to him, which has never been done in hollywood before. Uh, let me just look some up before I before I say too much. Um, so I think with that a lot of people are because because after 20 years it's going to refer to him, which means he is going to have full ownership of the movie. All the money it makes is going to, uh, go to him and him alone, and he's going to be able to control how the movie is distributed. Um, when those rights go to him in terms of streaming rights, you know all all that good stuff, it's all going to go to him after a certain amount of time. Uh, which is completely unheard of in hollywood.
Speaker 1:There are some of there's rumors that some execs out there are afraid of what this, of what that could mean for the movie, um, and what it could mean for the future of Hollywood. So it's this now it seems like there's this weird subset of things now, like there was this Variety article that came out not too long ago and basically they were talking about. Like it was like Sinners has made $60 million in its opening weekend, but it still has a long way to go before the movie is actually profitable and like, funny enough, it was like ben stiller, of all people like like, responded on like twitter. He was like it's like, which is basically like, why the fuck would you say that it's like the movie did well, why be giving it this, like this little backhanded bullshit? Uh, that comes along with it like, yeah, it made a lot of money, but it still ain't made enough money for it to actually be a profitable movie. First of all, it's the opening fucking weekend.
Speaker 1:Like, like, what movies make their entire? Which movies? What movie breaks even and makes profit on its opening weekend? Not a whole lot of them, I'm gonna tell you right now. So, the fact that they said that shit was so stupid and and it seems like it's it's this low-key, maybe a little small little, you know, behind the scenes smear campaign to try and make the movie seem like it's not doing as well to people not to go see it because, remember, the less, the less money it makes me, the less popular it is, which means, once it goes back to him, uh, it'll be pretty much be be useless. But yeah, that's the whole subset.
Speaker 1:So he got the 90, he got 90 million. I believe it cost 90 million to make. He got the 90 million dollars from the studio, still kind of put some of his own money into it, um, and, like I said, cut that deal for the rights to revert to him, and solely him, after a certain amount of time. So, um, you know, that is what it is. Uh, then, of course, you know, you got the usual shit. You know, a movie full of movie full of bracks movie, movie, full movie full of black people.
Speaker 1:So, uh, yeah, be able to certain subset of people who gonna talk, who gonna feel a certain certain way about it. Uh, yeah, especially there's a specific fact that it's, you know, in that, in that deep, deep Jim Crow South. So there's a subset of people who don't want to see shit like that, prefer to act like it never fucking happened. So there you go, um, but yeah, and in the, in the to try and not spoil anything, I will say, like the ending, the final action scene of the movie, I had a smile on my face the whole, the whole time. If y'all see it, y'all know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 1:Right, when everything was like it was done and it was like hey, we got one more thing we gotta handle. You go ahead and do do your stuff. I'm gonna stay here and I'm gonna take care of this other business and that business and that business gotta take care of, alright, hey, I believe, hey, I believe Chappelle's show. People find that shit funny. People find that shit funny and I did. But anyway, yeah, there's also, like I gotta say, a mid-credits scene. I like the avenue of that too, to display more of like how they handle the vampires in. This was just so well done and like it was a little bit of a swerve in that mid-credit scene. You thought they was there for one reason, but they're actually there for a whole another reason and I thought that was all of that was pretty dope.
Speaker 1:Um, yeah, so, like I mentioned, in the hopes in to try and avoid spoiling too much, or as much as possible, because I don't want to say too much, this is going to be a pretty short one. Sinners is damn good. I want to go see it again. I probably will end up going to go see it again at some point. I want to see more. See if I can pick up some more things in the movie that I missed the first time around. So I want to see it again. I probably will go see it again at some point. But, yeah, go see Sinners if you haven't already. Go see it in theaters, um, if you can, or you want to go check it out in IMAX, if not. Standard is good too. Uh, your boy's on a budget right now, so that's why I want to go see.
Speaker 1:But, um, yeah, amazing acting, great message, great act, great action. Uh, the the scares is there if you're interested in the scares. Um, nice, just just a good fucking movie, just all around, just like. If you again, if you was talking about how it was out of ideas, you want to run your mouth on that shit, how it was out of ideas. You sick of you sick of marvel movies and and how they ain't hitting as much as they used to.
Speaker 1:Go go check out sinners. It is a damn, a damn good movie. Um, in that there, uh, so I'll end it right there. Um, is it film of the year so far? Yeah, probably, uh, is it that damn good? Yes, it is, it is that damn good. So go check out sinners and your local theaters right now. Go check it out if you haven't.
Speaker 1:All right, like I said, that's it for me. That's all. That's all I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say the movie, I'm gonna just keep it at that. I don't want to spoil anything, um, but hey, that's how it is. You know, give, let it. Let give everybody ample time to to go out and see it and avoid spoilers. So, yes, sinners is sinners is good, sentence is damn good. So that's all I gotta say. All right, y'all.
Speaker 1:Thank you so much for watching. Check out some of the other stuff I'll talk about. Uh, I've talked about early this year, um, uh, then, mostly a lot of tv so far. Daredevil born again I got impressions on that uh, invincible, season three, paradise, uh, falcon and the winter soldier. I said I was gonna see more movies this year and so far this is. This is only the second movie I saw so far in theater, so we're gonna try to fix that for the summer. The summer is pretty fucking packed with some, with some movies right now, so we'll try to see as much of them as I can. That's it. Thank you so much for watching. I very much appreciate it. Always remember to stay watching, stay playing, stay awesome and, most importantly, stay safe out there. Watch out for the vampires with the glowy eyes, which is also really dope. A little detail to the eyes of the vampires, how they have this little gleaming glow like that right there in their eyes. That was really dope. Alright, everybody, until next time. I will see you all later. Goodbye.
